Every story has a backstory…here’s mine…since I was young, I’ve always been drawn to the water. I loved to surf and fish as a kid and still do today. I started working on the local boats at the age of 13 and progressed to long range and yachts. I worked for the next 14 years from Catalina to Puerto Vallarta and with a lot of time at sea, I became really aware of the elements around me. At the time, I was wearing jeans and got used to being wet all day. It was what it was, but it sparked something in me that I wouldn’t realize for years later.
Then one day in 1991, it dawned on me that fishing, surfing and free diving were not very different from each other. Each needed to move in and out of the water seamlessly while exposing themselves to harsh conditions. These were not three separate worlds, but one…ONE WATERMAN. So, I designed a durable, quick drying boardshort with pliers pockets, packed up my duffle bag, headed down to the docks and Deckies was born.
During this same time, I got a job in the surf industry. I started as a team manager/design assistant and worked myself up to the design director. I traveled the globe and got to know the ins and outs of the clothing world. I developed long-standing relationships along the way and paid close attention to details; in particular, what worked and what didn’t.
In 1996, after 5 years of trial and error, I changed the name to FISHWORKS, got my family involved and have been making quality products ever since. Much has changed over the last 27 years. Fishing is cool! It has become more than an action sport. It's a lifestyle. LIVE IT
